No, not by standing in front of Kylo Ren's house with gifts for him. And not by having so many gifts for him, albeit mostly small gifts. Not by even having the desire to give him gifts in the first place. (Though she supposes those should probably count. She just can't bring herself to care.)
She screwed up because the gifts she has are an odd assortment of trinkets that will more than likely be meaningless to him and jokes he probably won't think are funny. Which wouldn't be nearly so bad if she didn't have so many and had actually given them to him one by one as she acquired them instead of collecting them into one big stupid bunch. A bunch she's now got to give to him all at once randomly like the socially awful creature he'll almost certainly think she is. And the worst part is he wouldn't be completely wrong about that, desert scavenger that she is. But she's learned enough to know that walking up to someone's house and handed him some rubbish you should have given him months ago isn't anywhere near normal.
But she's here. And he'll have sensed her by now so it's too late to leave. So Rey takes a deep breath, clutches the smooth, black wood box tighter in her hands and adjusts the brown-paper-wrapped lumpy parcel under her arm, and approaches the door to give it three quick taps.]
[Ren shakes his head at the sound of Rey's knocking—he wondered how long it would take her to actually do something other than stalk outside, and he half expected her to leave. But she's apparently here for a visit, which is pleasant enough a prospect.
He opens the door with an amused quirk to his lips.]
"Hello in there."
[That's adorable. He steps aside to let her in, tilting his head as he spots those two packages. That is... suspiciously appropriate. He hesitates to make any assumptions, however; that tends to be a mistake when it comes to Rey.]
[It's not an unusual thing for Hux to be up this early.
Even though he was warm and comfortable under the blankets with Ren, he had things to do. He didn't go through all that trouble in buying gifts for his birthday to just let them go to waste. No, he's going to ensure that everything will be set up and aligned in the living room before Ren came out. Partly because he does want to make his partner pleased, but mostly to prove that he can do anything well if he puts his mind to it.
Also, he won't be outdone by anyone!!
Everything will be wrapped, the boxes aligned. Tea will be ready and breakfast food from Ren's favorite restaurant.]
[It's certainly not odd for Hux to slip out of bed before Ren does, no, even if sometimes he complains a bit about it.
It's to that end that Ren finally gets up and heads out of what is technically Hux's bedroom but tends to be their bedroom in practice, not yet thinking about the smells that are starting to spread through the house.
At the display that meets him when he steps into the living room, though, he has to stop and stare. He's not quite sure what he's looking at for a few moments.]
[ When Kylo wakes, he will find that his crystal is glowing! His emotion drops for the month of Octha have resonated with Empatheias' giant crystal, and a reaction has been formed.
He will also find that his blankets are gone and that he is inside a shark's mouth. It's just a doll, though, but it's oddly comfortable! He might even want to go back to sleep...
(Thank you for submitting to the Emotion Tracker!) ]
Waiting for Kylo come Christmas morning is a bag of cookies, but since Usagi isn't sure he even likes sweets, there's also a black scarf. Attached is a simple note:]
[Things may be complicated with them, yes, but Kylo isn't someone Leia is about to leave out of the "we don't celebrate this holiday but I care about you so you get a gift anyway" festivities. Even if he might rather he was left out.
In a neatly wrapped box, Kylo will find two things: one, Leia's approximation of an Alderaanian bread, which doesn't taste bad at all. Two, a pot containing a vine of Dunamis-grown candlewick flowers. They won't grow seeds or anything like that, but visually and behaviorally, they're the same flower: growing on a vine, opening at night, and glowing with an orange bio-luminescence.]
The pathetic form of Kylo Ren that was just a few feet away from him is nowhere in sight. Instead, there's just a bed and basic furniture, everything tidy and calm with no stormtroopers surrounding him. Obviously, he's not on Crait, he's not in the Resistance's 'last' stronghold (even though they escaped, again).
Just where is--
He closes his hand around something and notices a strange crystal filled with liquid, no, emotion drops. Empatheais.
Suddenly, almost two years of memories instantaneously slice into his mind and Hux screams. Partly out of genuine pain, but mostly because he remembers now. He remembers this planet, this city, this house... his close relationship with the man that he wanted to murder just a few seconds ago. It's not often he calls situations overwhelming, but there's truly no other way to describe this.
Along with the cold hatred resonating from Kylo's room is distress as Hux buries one hand into his head.]
[That pang of sudden negativity catches Kylo off guard enough that he cracks a few shower tiles in shock, and his head whips towards the source. He stands there under the shower in a moment of disbelief, but then hastily turns off the water and snatches Hux's bathrobe off the door, merely wanting something to cover up with that won't get in the way.
A moment later, the bathroom door opens, Kylo's chest heaving with anxious breaths. There's a distinct look of worry in his eye when he spots his partner, curled up in apparent pain.]
Armitage.
[He starts striding forward without any thoughts of needing to keep his distance or the fact that he's still dripping wet.]
[Leia has been busying herself by doing literally everything and anything that comes to mind rather than actually dealing with her own feelings. Those are something too hard and uncomfortable to deal with, whereas working to help other people is easy and familiar and something that makes her feel like she's being useful.
Even with all those duties, even with Han leaving, Leia can and does still find time to check on how Ben is dealing with the effects of his latest disaster. Much to his displeasure, she's sure. Waiting for Ben to answer the door, it's clear to anyone that knows her well that Leia isn't actually as composed as she both comes off and wants to be seen as. Her eyes look more tired, her body language is more rigid, and that's to say nothing about the slight chill in the air following wherever she goes.]
I wanted to check on you.
[Is the first thing she says whenever Kylo shows up.]
[Without the benefit of his extra senses, he has no idea who might be on the other side of the door before he opens it, but at the same time, anyone who might be there would be met with the same level of dull exhaustion.
So when he sees his mother standing there, there's not much of a reaction on his face. His eyes move over her slowly after her greeting of sorts, taking in the tense look about her, and he gets straight to the point.]
That's not all you're here for.
[It's not that he doesn't think she would visit "just to check on him," as she's done it before, even if he suspects that means "checking to see if he's doing something to judge him over." But even without his extra senses, the chill she's carrying about her is plenty to raise his suspicions.]
[So, Ren lied to him. It's not surprising, really. Hux had his doubts about Rey killing the Supreme Leader and his entire guard on her own. It didn't line up, but he decided to bury his doubts until he had direct evidence.
And now with the scavenger's account, he has said intel. There's no reason for him to ignore this, especially since Ren essentially lied to him to his face about this. So before the thought of that can manifest into any ridiculous hurt, Hux finds Ren and goes straight to the point.
He has little regard to his partner's current state. He's been in this mood for days now.]
Well, Supreme Leader, I found out something rather interesting today.
[His mood over the past few days, of course, has only been worse than it had been since losing his powers, and it had already been an understatement to call him miserable before Han Solo's disappearance. The state of their living room the day Ren found out was probably enough of an indication of just how much it worsened.
He did fix it and return everything to its place as promised, but... things haven't really improved otherwise since then.
Ren doesn't reply vocally to Hux when he approaches and speaks, but he does turn his head towards Hux to show he's listening, even if he lacks the emotional energy for much of a discussion, and even if the sarcastic title forces the slightest wince out of him. He can only imagine what he must have done to bring forward that sort of tone.]
[Over the course of the past two weeks, Hux has been returning home later and later and when he does, he's done his best to avoid speaking to Ren and just isolate himself in his own room. What's there to say to him? The general still hates the knight with his entire being, because if he doesn't, then he'll have to admit that he feels jealous and hurt and insignificant.
It's much easier to be angry and filled with loathing for Ren.
So this pattern of behavior lasts until the night of the 15th, where Hux doesn't return at all. Now it's morning and there's still no sign of the general.]
[As soon as Kylo wakes up from his unintentional sleep early that morning, he jolts upright and gets to his feet, realizing that he'd eventually drifted off waiting for the other man to return to their home.
He hadn't come back.
He hadn't come back, so where was he? Was Armitage alright? With his distance lately, it was reasonable to assume that he had just decided not to come back, but then where would he go? And what if he hadn't willingly decided and was trapped somewhere, or even injured?
Not willing to take that risk, Kylo heads out immediately to search, attempting to contact Hux over the amulets.]
Another month, another batch of new arrivals. Nobody from Kylo Ren's world, this month. Nobody from Kevin's. So it should be a pretty peaceful evening, right? They can both breathe a sigh of relief at the utter lack of new drama (there's no new Voltrons, either) and enjoy doing whatever it is they are going to do in the weeks leading up to Helisium.
"KYLO REN!"
Yeah, no. Kevin is having an Issueâ„¢. And it is an Issueâ„¢ that has him barging unrepentantly into Kylo's house -- or trying to -- bellowing his name with nary the slightest bit of regard for things like Kylo's boyfriend or the droid thing, both of which he probably tried and failed to bond with the last time he was over here trying to make Kylo drink tea. He's angry enough that he's shedding tiny fires everywhere as he goes, but fortunately, they snuff out quickly, and they don't actually leave any scorchmarks or ash in their wake.
They leave salt. Kevin is setting fires, and the fires are creating little piles of salt. The Issueâ„¢ is that petty.
Ren cannot imagine what in the world would bring Kevin Regnard to his door—which he has thankfully decided should still be locked most of the time—shouting his name in such a manner. If it was actually dire, the amulets would have sufficed. This is clearly some other kind of issue.
... out of boredom and reluctant curiosity, he heads to the door and opens it, pinning Regnard with a skeptical, slightly annoyed look. He's definitely much more himself compared to the last time Kevin was here.
[Ah, it's the girl. She seems to be back in good health—which is about what he expected, after hearing of the efforts to gather her friends to restore her. What kind of mess caused all of that, he wonders.]
I did. I take it you've recovered fully?
[You know, no big deal. He just carried her bridal style halfway across the city.]
[Hux reassured Kylo multiple times that he would be fine taking on the task that involved murdering some asshole pirates. He has a blaster and he's a good shot, so what could go wrong? He's not a First Order general for no reason! A bunch of lowlife pirates could never get the upper hand!
...Well, to Hux's credit, he managed to complete the task. Just not completely unscathed.
Holding his injured right arm close to his body, the general lets out a sigh before letting himself in. Maybe he'll be fortunate and Kylo will be out doing something before he notices him. Of course, he could've just went to the medcenter to get this looked at, but it isn't serious enough. It's just bloodied and swollen, nothing that a makeshift bandage couldn't hide.]
[Kylo wanted to give him another chance to prove himself, he really did. It's why he let Armitage leave without his accompaniment and minimal complaints earlier.
With Kylo sitting in his usual chair as the redhead enters, he has no such luck being able to avoid him. If the knight has anything to say about it, he never will, either.
Bruises would have been fine, a scrape or two he wouldn't have said anything over. And while he is glad that the injury appears to be nothing major, it nonetheless appears to be causing his partner a considerable amount of pain.
Like hell is he going to allow Armitage to settle for anything as crude as a makeshift bandage.]
[Hux is many things, but forgetful isn't one of them. It was exactly two years ago that he and Kylo first kissed in their backyard, right after they sparred for the first time. He's not quite sure how it happened, well, that's not entire true. He can blame the various situations in this world that forced them become closer, until they eventually viewed each other as partners.
Anyway, he thought that a two year anniversary should be acknowledged, despite Kylo being the Supreme Leader now and all the mess back home.
Of course, Kylo developing feelings for the girl did not help at all either, but she's gone and he doesn't have to think about her anymore. Hopefully.
And despite the tension between them now, Hux doesn't want this thing between them to weaken... or disappear. If it does, it's going to be on his terms, not Kylo's. He is not letting him go otherwise.]
...
[However, such thoughts aren't on his mind as he looks for Kylo, eventually finding him in the backyard of their home. Hux watches him train quietly for a moment, just holding a bag of food he brought from a restaurant they both favor.]
[Kylo takes the time to finish his forms, despite becoming aware of the other man's presence. Focus has been the thing he's been struggling with, despite being able to harness his negativity so well in the past. He can't allow for distractions, even when they came from those he actually cares about—or especially if they do.
He doesn't know what he's training for, but if he doesn't strive towards something he knows he'll lose hold of whatever semblance of living he has left.
He's in his robes, covered from the neck down—it's given him some protection against the unstable nature of the lightning he's been attempting to harness. The dark streaks on the training dummies speak to at least some success, at least.]
What is it?
[His tone isn't so short to imply he's irritated at the intrusion, but he doesn't necessarily sound all that interested, either.]
[Kylo will find himself in a nondescript room, the floor as gray as the walls surrounding it. Of course, the lack of any real warmth and familiar color scheme may clue him that he's in a star destroyer, but it probably doesn't matter, not when Hux is standing in front of a large bacta tank with a neutral look on his face.
That part isn't unusual, but what is strange is the large man inside the tank that is swearing and screaming-- which can somehow be heard even though he's still submerged in the bacta.]
Armitage, how dare you-- I know that you're behind this!!
[The room is backlit in red when Kylo steps closer, a light gust ruffling his cloak as he takes a step closer. He only recognizes the older, portly looking man vaguely, but context makes it clear enough who he is.
Dispassionate but curious, Ren doesn't move into view just yet. This seems to be a moment between Armitage and his father, and he won't interrupt unless he's invited to do so.]
[Ren is of half a mind to stop wearing his amulet until this whole mess is finally fixed. At least this isn't nearly as unfortunate as the stray thoughts that left him the other day, and it's an... interesting enough topic. He guesses.]
I doubt that many seek out their aligned Arehtei, especially among those with no interest in the spiritual.
[It's been some time now, since Leia's departure, and while Ignis isn't so certain he can call Kylo Ren a friend, he certainly considered his mother as such. It seemed improper to check in on him too soon, knowing how withdrawn he tended to be to begin with, but now, Ignis thinks it's been long enough— and there's no rule against dropping a line to a semi-friendly acquaintance, at any rate.]
Ignis Scientia here. Pardon the intrusion, but I realized it's been some time since we've spoken or seen one another. Can you spare a few moments of your time?
[Hrm. They... did not have the greatest of interactions last time they met. The entire city was out of sorts at the time, certainly, but that doesn't make things any less uncomfortable.]
What is it?
[His tone doesn't sound impatient, at least; he'd just rather get to the point than waste time with small talk.]
Edited (i am an elipsis monster :() 2019-09-12 21:20 (UTC)
Pretty sure I know what brought this on, but hey I still totally want in on this.
[There's definitely a heavy undercurrent of despair here. If something like that works, Junko can definitely think of a few applications for it that suit her own purposes. Particularly ones she's avoided so far.
But that's only if it works.]
And in case my feelings are bleeding through this thing, I'm totally not gonna screw it up. It's way more despair inducing if this is a success than not.
[So that whole talk about plotting the other month, huh.]
What would you be bringing to it, exactly. Are you an engineer?
[It's said with a tone that implies he's not expecting the answer to be yes. Although he's not opposed to sharing, whatever her purposes may be, she has to contribute.]
The power suppression device. For what reason are you looking to create it? [Also, hello, how are you. Mewtwo doesn't know how to talk to people. At least he (surprisingly) doesn't sound overly judgmental.]
[Ren isn't certain if this question will go anywhere productive—he's used to being judged—but it's a potential taker. He's not ashamed of his motives, either.]
To prevent those who would abuse their power from harming others.
[That's a very noble goal for a known violent killer. ... But he's actually being a hundred percent sincere here, even if the "others" he's mainly concerned about are the people closest to him.]
The law enforcement here is limited in their effectiveness, and those strong enough to stop others may not always be available or care enough to do so.
Hi there. I'm a mechanic. I've never worked with something like power suppressors, but that's more because my world has had no need for them. I'd like to give building one a try, however.
sorry for the wait, thanksgiving trip was busy! - voice
[A mechanic. While that's... potentially relevant to the project, it doesn't give him much idea of what experience this kid might actually bring to it.]
What kinds of machines are you used to working with?
[It was truly inevitable that Hux would disappear, leaving only his crystal as a promise that he'd return soon. And perhaps that would've been reassuring in a normal sense, but with their tumultuous relationship back home, and Kylo's own difficult return, a sense of dread was far more prevalent here. Even Hux became anxious about returning back, obvious by his distress as he waited for Kylo to recover. He of course developed some plans to discuss things with him more, maybe prepare himself for the future, because that would help, right?
Except, Hux disappeared far quicker than perhaps expected.
Unlike the buildup, after three days and without any sort of fanfare or warning-- his return is entirely abrupt; the general landing harshly on the floor next to Kylo's bed, a loud cry of pain soon accompanying the sound. It's entirely undignified, but for once, Hux doesn't seem to care much about appearance, gasping and nearly scrambling as he gets up from the floor. Confusion and pain radiates from him and he looks around with a near wild look, before he sets his gaze on Kylo's bed and the person currently inhabiting it.
[Now that Ben has had some time to recover and come back to himself, he's worked out a few more specifics of the things that have happened back home. He's been staring at the general's crystal on and off in the times he hasn't had guests, and Hux's disappearance only helped to focus his recollections in some ways. Regardless of whatever the man goes through back home, though, Ben knows his hatred will be renewed again.
He isn't looking forward to it, as much as he misses his partner.
The recovering has let his senses sharpen, too, so when the redhead lands in the room, that storm of feelings is obvious even without the panicked expression and erratic movements.]
Armitage?
[His voice is soft with concern, but he's lucid and alert thanks to the uneasy feeling he's getting. He's certain the last time Hux returned didn't go well, but he's not going to sit there and wait for the man to fly into a rage.]
