It's part of his charm. [Not really.] I'm used to it.
[It's obvious soon enough that Ren is making omelettes, not wasting any time by turning his attention towards Han. Still, his annoyance at his father's proximity may be heating the stove a bit faster than it needs to be, so—]
[han huffs at him, extensively, both for his defensive of hux and his giving of orders.]
You shouldn't have to put up with it. And I can cook, alright? Or at least chop stuff up. Great at choppin' things.
[at least he's not hovering super close anymore, to give ren room to prep the food. but he doesn't want to just go sit awkwardly in the living room or something either.]
[There's a lot about Verens that's been weighing in Leia's mind lately. How nice and scenic it all is, how she hasn't been in a place this relatively peaceful in... well, since she was much younger on Alderaan, probably. It was nice, not having to worry about war or the Empire or any of that here.
And then there were the people here. The people she didn't or couldn't meet this way back home. And thankfully for Leia, the shore of Lake Niras has both of those positive points today: peaceful scenery, and Ben just so happened to be there. He probably notices her, she's sure, and even if he wasn't about to approach her, that doesn't matter, since Leia is more than happy taking the initiative to approach him, regardless of whatever he's doing.]
It's nice to see you outside, Ben.
[Sure, he goes outside a lot, but usually she doesn't run into him outside of his house. Probably as he wants it.]
[He gets the feeling that if he gives Han an inch he'll take a mile, and he's already gotten enough dad-affection for the day. He glowers at the other man for a moment before gesturing with his head towards the corner of the kitchen, where there's nothing he needs and is far enough out of the way to minimize Kylo's irritation.]
Just stand over there.
[And because he feels the need to defend his decisions and his partner, even if he'd much rather Han not know at all, he grumbles a response about Hux as he scowls at the pan in front of him.]
It's not as if that's the only thing he's capable of.
[Kylo has made a few trips to the lake before, but it's never quite been for the same purpose he's visiting now. Today, he's there for a relatively similar reason to Leia, appreciating the view of it as he thinks of how much he'd like to stay as long as possible.
It's easy enough to tell when his mother starts to approach, and he doesn't bother to turn to her from where he's sitting as she addresses him. She's hardly worth his time, and her presence is ruining the scenery and his mood... Having her here is one of the few downsides to staying in Verens more permanently.]
[His dour response isn't enough to deter Leia, though really it never has proven to be a deterrent in their time here, Elios affected or not. It's more that in this case, while his words cause her to pause for just a moment, it's almost as if they didn't even register with her in the first place.
Leia doesn't stop her approach until she's right up next to Kylo, within an arm's reach of him.]
If I had known you spend your time here, I would've spent more time here at the lake.
[Nice scenery, Ben hanging around, all that she needs here are Bail and Han and it's perfect.]
[Although he regards her with a dull look nearing a scowl, he doesn't move. He doesn't take much time looking at her, though, very much preferring to focus his gaze on the surface of the lake.]
I don't, typically.
[A few times, certainly, but given the fact that they're restricted to only this planet (and besides that, a mere three cities), it would be a mistake if he hadn't been at least once or twice to take in the limited variety.]
No, I didn't think that was something you enjoyed.
[Granted, she doesn't know a lot about what he does enjoy. She knows he likes or is good at cooking, that he likes training, and that he is good enough at building things. She knows a bit about the sort of foods he likes. And the longer they both stay here, the more she can learn about and spend time with Ben here. It works out perfectly.]
[Ren folds his arms, taking a deep breath as he stares out at the water. His answer is somewhat quiet and sort of trails off, though in a thoughtful way rather than something concerned.]
I don't know.
[He has some ideas about what might have drawn him here, but he prefers to do his thinking in his head, rather than aloud where his mother can hear. So instead, he turns the question outwards, to distance the conversation from his own thoughts and feelings.]
[Unlike him, it's a thought Leia doesn't mind sharing with her son, because there's no shame in it if you ask her.
Well, there are other places in Verens just as nice as the lakefront, but she doesn't come here often enough and it was worth the visit. Ben being here makes it more than worth it.]
I was thinking about how peaceful things are here.
[It's been a few days since all this came to mind, a few days for Leia to sort out her thoughts on everything. Rather than jumping in on her own, her first idea is to consult Ben, to see how things were when he was growing up, if he's willing to provide that much. It's a harmless risk, and one she's more than willing to take, given that she's always interested in speaking with Ben. She'd tried to reach him a few times in the days before this, but to no avail, with him, for all she knew, ignoring her questions.]
I have something I'd like to ask you.
[And before he can just shut her out, if he were so inclined, she continues--]
When you were younger, was there a day we chose to celebrate your father's birthday?
[Which will not last, but for now, it has been quiet on the negative front. It's not something he'd encourage to continue, but it has its benefits. Peace isn't something Kylo has known in a long time.]
I'm certain that will change soon enough, knowing this place.
[Ugh... this isn't what he wanted when he got back from his outing, but at least he got several days out on his own with nothing but nature and quiet. He was going to have to come back to all this eventually.]
Don't encourage him to get up to anything more than he already does.
[He doesn't think Han actually gets up to anything too crazy in Verens, but it's a good way to deflect from the question. Just to be difficult. He can never give his mother a straight answer.]
[Not that she doesn't try, but well. Talking Han Solo out of doing anything is difficult, even for her. It's more of a general response, though, since she has no idea if getting up to anything more than usual is something he does in the future for birthdays.]
But was there a day we chose to celebrate his birthday?
[Ben's sureness that things will change just makes Leia frown. Sure, history is on his side here, but she'd like to think things are bound to change here at some point.]
You should be more optimistic, Ben. There's no proof things aren't taking a turn for the better here.
[As she speaks, Leia reaches for Kylo, placing a hand gently on his arm.]
[There's a notable pause between her question and his answer, and a feeling as if he's staring her down, deliberating.
His answer is dull, like he's too tired to deal with this right now. As much as he hates actually giving his mother what she wants, she's going to keep asking him, and unfortunately, arguing would be more irritating than enjoyable at the current moment.]
[That's much easier than she expected it to be, and there's a faint feeling of surprise at that, growing stronger when she does the math to realize that it would probably be... this same day. That doesn't give her much time.
But even though she's now in a rush, now has much more to do than she originally planned to today, Leia feels as though she should push her luck just a little more. Just in case.]
I don't suppose you'd be willing to share when yours is?
[Kylo doesn't move, but he glances at Leia with little emotion in his face. There's not even disdain, really, unlike usual. His usual hatred and revulsion is being tempered, for whatever reason.
That doesn't mean he's going to start agreeing with her, though...]
There's no proof they are.
[He's not about to think everything is going to be nothing but flowers and sunshine, even if he does want to stay. He's already admitted before that a part of him craves that conflict, anyway.]
[Now he's indignant, almost offended at the memory that's come back with the mention of his own birthday. The other information is easy enough to give up, because it doesn't necessarily have to do with him.
... still, there's a kind of warmth that comes with the end of it, with the memory of what happened after they left. It's something he shields quickly enough, but the feeling slips through for a brief moment regardless.]
[That warmth confuses her, just for a moment, when coupled with his insistence that they ruined his birthday last time. Not that she knows when that could be, since it seems like he considers his time ruined whenever he sees her.]
[It isn't something she means to send out, exactly, it just sort of happened to send as she's considering when she might have visited him together with Han that would fit with his version of events. Thanks, telepathy, for that.
Invading his privacy, though, she can't really deny that part.]
[In any other situation, that lack of disdain that she's come to expect from Ben might cause her to be instantly suspicious. Instead, she takes it as another reason it's fine to stay here. Ben is warming up to her finally, not berating her or leaving or anything. The longer they stay here, the better she can get to know him.]
You can stay pessimistic even when looking at something like this?
