Haven't I told you about my other ability? In addition to being despairingly fashionable and despairingly full of despair, I'm also a despairingly brilliant analyst.
[So no, not an engineer, but she doesn't think that's quite a dealbreaker.]
So despairingly brilliant at analyzing, that with limited exposure to something, I can pick up anything useful from it and replicate it or twist it as I see fit. I've got experience with neuroscience, a little robotics, a little computer programming here and there, even some totally messed up ways of introducing subliminal messaging, all from hanging around people who have the know how and watching them work, even if I didn't originally.
[And those are just a few examples from back home. Who even knows how many things she's picked up over time here?]
So while I'm not necessarily an engineer, I can be one pretty quickly if needed. Or, let's say you find someone and they totally vanish in the middle of the project, leaving their work an unfinished, incomprehensible mess. Or if they suddenly develop certain moral objections to finishing things. I'd say I'm probably the best person for figuring it out and keeping things on track.
[That seems like a bit of a ludicrous claim, but it's Enoshima. She's equally likely to be telling the truth as she is to suddenly go "just kidding!" probably with the intent of getting someone's hopes up so she can crush them or to stave off boredom or something.
He considers this for a few moments. If he doesn't get any takers, perhaps her skills might be useful in getting him an engineer if money isn't enough of a draw. Reliable isn't a word he'd use for the young woman, but she's the least likely to have moral objections, that's for sure.
What a weird job interview.]
If anyone else responds, I'll contact you. I suppose you can look at my notes in the meantime. [Guess who stole back as much of his emotion energy research from Briarlan as he could?]
[That's not a bad idea, she's pretty good at procurement. It's been a while since she's done anything like that, but she could probably find an engineer. Though what state the engineer is in might be a bit of an issue.]
Sure, send me what you have and I'd be happy to look it over. And I'm super looking forward to working with you.
[Though if this falls through, she'll despair, so it's not like she can really lose here.]
The power suppression device. For what reason are you looking to create it? [Also, hello, how are you. Mewtwo doesn't know how to talk to people. At least he (surprisingly) doesn't sound overly judgmental.]
[Ren isn't certain if this question will go anywhere productive—he's used to being judged—but it's a potential taker. He's not ashamed of his motives, either.]
To prevent those who would abuse their power from harming others.
[That's a very noble goal for a known violent killer. ... But he's actually being a hundred percent sincere here, even if the "others" he's mainly concerned about are the people closest to him.]
The law enforcement here is limited in their effectiveness, and those strong enough to stop others may not always be available or care enough to do so.
[As long as they can work, he doesn't really care. Ethics shmethics.]
I'll drop them off tomorrow.
[It's probably better if he types up a copy. He's made more than a few scribbles in the margins anyway, so it'll be better to organize it for himself as well. Plus all the results from their trials could be better documented, and he still needs to gather his observations from that last trial, even if it was a failure followed by more failures.
... that was a very bad time in his life here. But it's time to move past it.]
[It'll be fine, they'll have all their limbs attached still and everything.]
Thanks, I should be around. But if I'm not just let yourself in and leave them wherever. There's no key under the mat or anything like that, but we both know that's not really a problem.
[Murder references aside, she'll enjoy going through the all the documentation surrounding Kylo's failures. And probably despair while reading them, but none of that's surprising.]
[Will Enoshima ever stop bringing up the murder? Unlikely. Will Ren ever start caring enough to be uncomfortable about it? Absolutely not.
Junko will find the documents delivered early the next day as promised, typed up relatively neatly (for someone who has barely used a mechanical typewriter) and organized as well as one would expect of a mad science experiment. Along with a very basic abstract of the original purpose, he's included observations of the test trials that were done outside of Verens, some basic schematics for the device that eventually malfunctioned, as well as the results from some direct experiments that Otherworlders participated in, which Ren has marked as being of particular interest.
Sure, cancelling emotional effects is something he's still interested in, but being able to eliminate Otherworlder abilities is the ultimate goal now. The more they know about how they all interact with this planet on a metaphysical level, the closer they'll be to achieving that goal.
Attached is also an additional note, handwritten this time:]
Contact me if you're interested in payment. Whatever doesn't jeopardize the project is fine.
[She'd be super weirded out if he did start caring or being uncomfortable about it. Then it'd be time to see if the pod people invaded.
But anyways she'll go through all of this and despair over seeing which Otherworlders participated. There's some names in there that are super important to her which causes all sorts of gross despair feelings.
And once she's done reviewing and despairing, she'll send a note of her own, whether he honors it or not, she doesn't really care.]
It won't cost you much. I just want copies of everything, whether the project succeeds or fails.
Hi there. I'm a mechanic. I've never worked with something like power suppressors, but that's more because my world has had no need for them. I'd like to give building one a try, however.
[It does sound noble, but Mewtwo has the power of Pessimism on his side.]
While that is true, the device could easily be abused itself. Correct? Who would be responsible for it? [He'll assume Kylo has thought about this. If not, that will be disappointing, but this doesn't feel like just a vague proposition.]
sorry for the wait, thanksgiving trip was busy! - voice
[A mechanic. While that's... potentially relevant to the project, it doesn't give him much idea of what experience this kid might actually bring to it.]
What kinds of machines are you used to working with?
[Kylo has a Very Specific Purpose in mind, but this person doesn't need to know the emotional background. It boils down to this:]
I would.
[... okay he also maybe agreed to let a certain despair-inclined girl have access to everything as well in exchange for her help, but he'll take responsibility for that, it's fine. ... although.]
The titles I hold in my galaxy mean nothing here, and you can find enough evidence in this city's public records that I shouldn't be trusted.
[What with the murder and the assault and the property damage and the one time he screwed up the whole city's emotional effects and amulet connections for a month last year. At least he's honest.]
All you have is my word. It's for protection only.
Mostly different variety of vehicles, but I've also got some experience on robots and household machines. But there's never been a project that's been impossible for me so far.
[Sadly, Kylo is not easily impressed, especially by broad statements from strangers. If he's going to be expending resources, he's going to need more context.]
Be more specific. What are these robots and machines capable of?
[Well, now he's going to have to look up the name "Kylo Ren" in the city records. In the meantime, though; ]
Your word is unconvincing. You are concerned for the safety of the populace, but you have no plan for working with them? And, in fact, you believe they will be predisposed not to trust you?
Is there another reason why you would want this device?
Well, my biggest project most definitely was a machine that caused the whole world to be polluted. I know, that doesn't sound great, but I was under some brainwashing. It was still my own skill.
[Otherwise though, his more sane projects.]
I've also made radio video phones pretty much from scratch and also a small robot army that explode that I can control on a joystick. I've also opened up a robot to find out why it stopped functioning... sort of an autopsy.
[This feels like a pointed amount of interrogation for a skeptic, and Ren has to wonder what the purpose is. Some past experience related to this kind of thing, perhaps.
Now that he thinks about it, that makes this exchange more intriguing.]
To protect a particular person who is in need of it. That's it.
[He has no qualms about it being used for the sake of the city, but his main objective is more selfish. If good comes from it, even better, but that's a side effect and nothing more.]
It's not my concern whether I'm found trustworthy.
[Hmm. Morality is the furthest thing from his mind at the current moment, so the scale of such a project does sound... promising. Not that he wants to cancel the powers of all the Otherworlders, exactly. It's an intriguing thought, but he can see that going very poorly.]
Have you worked with this world's technology yet?
[There is something of a barrier there, he's found. It's mostly because of Ren's familiarity with kyber crystals that he was able to adjust, since they're roughly parallel with the amulets of this world as far as power sources go. Other universes don't always have that kind of thing.]
Ahh. There is more to this request, then. [Interesting. And interesting that Kylo's words suggest that it's to help keep a particular someone from being hurt, rather than to stop a particular someone from using their powers.
Does that make this all more reasonable, in Mewtwo's eyes? Well...perhaps a bit. But that still doesn't mean that this theoretical device couldn't be used to harm others.]
If you are reaching out to the community for help, then it should be your concern. Unless you can offer something of incredible value as payment, why would someone assist an untrustworthy person?
Outdated in some ways, but unique in others. Working with amulets and cores requires control over more than just the physical engineering. [A pause.] But the metaphysical is more of my specialty.
[Kylo may not be able to focus his emotions in a healthy way, but it works well enough for this kind of thing. Alright—he's not opposed to working with this person. If he doesn't prove to be useful, it's not like anything will be necessary to dismiss him.]
