[She expected more shouting, more breaking things, more of the seemingly usual ways Kylo expresses anger. Not this.
He steps forward too suddenly for her to react, and before she knows it, his hand is on her throat. Leia's eyes go wide, and her breath catches in her throat--out of surprise and the pressure he's applying. Her hands immediately go to his wrist, in an attempt to pull his hand off of her, and with that, a layer of frost spreads up his sleeve.
She tries to keep her feet touching the ground, enough so she's at least somewhat able to walk rather than be fully dragged. Because she's trying to do anything she can to lessen that pressure on her neck. The trembling in his grip and the stricken edge to his expression are lost on Leia, for the moment, as she's far too focused on attempting to get him to let go and relieve pressure on her throat.]
They don't mean anything to me. You should be well-aware that the First Order doesn't take note of such pointless days.
[Of course, that contradicts the fact that Hux did bother to remember Ren's birthday. He decides not to point that out, unless Ren wants to bring it up. Talking about feelings is still difficult to him, especially ones that express positive sentiment towards another individual.]
[Hux is certainly being difficult about all this. Not that that's unexpected, but he was hoping a simple explanation wouldn't result in this sort of defensiveness. He looks down at his plate, but then gives the redhead a faint smile.]
Perhaps I was still expecting General Hux instead of Armitage.
[Hux stares down at his coffee, not quite sure what to really say. It's a sentiment that Ren has expressed to him before, but it always sounds so odd to him. He can understand what he's trying to get at, since General Hux of the First Order would not care about Kylo Ren, let alone his birthday.
Before coming here, there was truly no separation between the general and Armitage. But he's been away from the First Order for almost two years now, something that has never happened to him before...]
You're speaking as of Armitage is a weak willed boy who would remember things like birthdays.
[Ren is puzzled by the comment, a slight furrow in his brow as he responds. Where in the world did that idea come from?]
The very last thing I would ever call you is weak willed, Armitage. Remembering sentimental things doesn't make you weak.
[... that's not what Snoke would say, probably, but honestly? Kylo doesn't give half a damn about what Supreme Leader might think about this. About them.]
...You know as much as I do that comment is incorrect. Sentiment is what makes us weak. It develops into attachment, an emotion that can easily be manipulated.
[But despite his somewhat harsh words, Hux still remembered Ren's birthday and did his best to prepare for it. He cannot deny any of that.]
[His jaw clenched, Kylo looks away for a few moments, a bit of the sunlight dimming in the room.]
Then let us be weak. I don't care.
[Perhaps it's a surprise to hear that from him, a man who's tried so hard several times to deny any weakness. But he's so far separated from all the conflict in their galaxy thanks to the happiness he's experienced here that he can't find it in himself to give a damn.]
Waiting for Kylo come Christmas morning is a bag of cookies, but since Usagi isn't sure he even likes sweets, there's also a black scarf. Attached is a simple note:]
[...Kylo doesn't care about being weak? To hear him say such a thing, even now, is completely surprising to Hux. If they were back in their galaxy, he would've pounced on this chance to see Ren's weakness and use it against him. Although, he never thought that he would be the one to cause this weakness in the first place... at least while they're here.
However, Hux isn't ready to admit that he can be weak. Fragile.]
I did remember, didn't I?
[Although admitting that probably says enough things as well.]
[After several seconds, Kylo finally works up the nerve to look at his partner again, and he reaches out his hand to place atop Hux's knee. His expression has a vulnerability to it, one that's almost uncertain, and his words are nothing but sincere.]
[While Hux doesn't vocally acknowledge his words, he covers Ren's hand with his own and lightly grips it. If anyone from the Order saw him like this, it would be something to take advantage of. Personal relationships and attachments have always been frowned upon... but no one is here to see him, no one can use this against him. It's fine now.
...He finds himself not wanting to lose this, even if someone from the Order showed up.]
[Nearly all of that uncertainty melts away as he smiles slightly, giving him an almost smug look just thanks to his natural expression. It's just a fact of being a Solo.
Kylo wouldn't give up what they have here for the galaxy. Not that he suspects he'd need to—Hux would gladly take it by his side, he knows.]
Of course. I'll leave it up to you to pick which comes first.
[Taking Hux's hand serves as Kylo's answer, and he gets to his feet to follow his partner wherever he'd like to direct him. At this point he has no worries about what the gifts might be; he's confident that he'll like them, whatever they are.]
[He leads Kylo to where his presents are stacked at, before beckoning him to take a seat. Once he's settled in, Hux grabs a present that he's somewhat confident that he'll like. Might as well start strong, right?
He hands him the box, which when opened, will reveal several cooking utensils and pans. All top quality, of course.]
[He hasn't really stopped trailing flowers since the redhead woke him up, and that continues until he sits on the couch; he'll have to take care of those later, but for now that's in the very back of his mind.
It's quite a hefty package that Armitage hands to him, and Kylo can't help but be interested in what's inside, so he wastes no time opening it to see what's inside. When he sees the new kitchen supplies, the result even before he takes them out to examine them is a few four-leafed clovers appearing midair behind him to float down like petals.]
[Ren doesn't put much effort into lifting her off the ground, but if Leia manages to do much more than stumble backwards with the pace he's moving at, it will be surprising. He completely ignores the ice crawling up his hand and arm, especially since he's already making a bit of frost on his own, leaving behind white spiderwebs of it on the floor as he steps forward.
He opens the door with a wave of his free hand, slamming it against the wall, and when he gets to the threshold he pushes her physically out of the house with a shout. Given that there are a few stairs leading up to the porch, hopefully she won't fall too far back and have to deal with them.]
[She stumbles as he pushes her out, falling to the ground just short of the edge of the stairs. She sits there for a moment, hands shaking, taking the time to breathe and attempt to calm down. Or at least to look the part, anyway. Her efforts to try and relax and regain her composure do nothing for the ice making its way across the floor and up the support pillars.
But Leia plans on ignoring the obvious signs of her discomfort, as usual, and pulls herself up to her feet after a few moments. Her expression is guarded, wary of Kylo and what he might do next, but Kylo--someone who was raised by and grew up around Leia--will easily recognize the hurt behind her expression.]
You don't need to force yourself to act like him. You're better than that.
[It's obvious who "him" refers to, with the hatred with which Leia says the word.]
[Of course Kylo sees that hurt even if he couldn't sense it, but it's exactly what he wanted to do, even if there's a hint of pain behind his own glare. At least, until he's mentioned, which he also picks up on immediately, and instead all that frost starts to melt thanks to the wave of heat that comes off of him.]
Don't compare me to that failure.
[He's begun to agree with Leia that Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader are the same stupid man, the more he thinks about it. Even as much as he likes to separate himself from Ben Solo, that's because he fully intends to break off from the sorts of mistakes that ended the Sith Lord. If he's foolish enough to let his family chain him down, then they can call him what they like when he's dead.
For now, though, he's mostly pissed off at what he's seen as disrespect from the former Jedi.]
Even aside from how weak he allows himself to be, he's disgusting.
[Are those four-leafed clovers? That's new... but it's a sign that Kylo truly likes the cookware. It truly is tempting to start a flower shop and make a small fortune on the side. Pleasing Kylo isn't difficult nowadays.]
...Yes, I thought we established that much. [It's like a present to himself giving Kylo all this.] You should be aware that the First Order never placed much focus on making food exceptionally tasty for everyone.
[Well, if Hux ever does decide to start up that flower shop, he'll certainly know what to do to get plenty of merchandise.]
I know. It's just nice to hear once in a while.
[And Kylo has no problem providing his partner with home cooking; in a way it's a sort of possessive thing, that he's the only one who's ever gotten to do it. It's almost a point of pride.]
[Leia doesn't disagree with any of those opinions of Anakin Skywalker, but the fact that they're coming from Ben, and not from her or Han, makes Leia pause. She knew Ben wasn't on the greatest terms with Anakin, but the last time he had come up in conversation, it hadn't prompted this much anger from him.
She raises an eyebrow, studying Kylo for a moment after his answer. When she responds, she speaks a bit slower than normal, as if expecting it to be a trap or for Kylo's reasoning for this turn in his attitude toward Anakin being something she wouldn't approve of. Something like "oh he wouldn't teach me Dark Side nonsense."]
What did he do to you?
[Because as always with Anakin, when she hears about him, Leia's first impulse is to assume Anakin did something to whoever's talking about him. She doesn't trust him to behave any other way, and thinking of the worst-case scenario and planning for that tends to make the less horrible options easier to deal with.]
[The events on the surface were aggravating in more than a few ways, but in addition to the rise in temperature, the wood of the door frame starts to flake and curl, not unlike the curl of his lip.
It's utterly and wholly deplorable, what he had the misfortune to witness. Kylo may not always be ashamed of himself when he needs to be, but he has some amount of decency.]
He managed to leave a scar despite repeatedly refusing to the fight I wanted. As much as I want to forget it, it's a reminder of how flawed everything from that time was.
[Kylo certainly does appreciate the fact that Armitage actually does bother to express his positive thoughts far more these days, but he knows it's still a struggle to get the redhead to express what he's feeling if it doesn't have anything to do with the First Order.
Sure, he can just sense it for the most part, but it's not nearly the same as hearing it said aloud.
Ren sets the box on the floor next to him to get it out of the way; he'll put those away whenever he's done with gifts and maybe some extra time with his partner.]
